Invitation for a panel celebrating 20 years of Polish EU membership
We are excited to announce an event organised in co-operation with KCL Polish Society, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Poland’s accession to the European Union, under the topic of protecting fundamental human rights. 🇪🇺🇵🇱
Membership in the EU is not only about economic benefits or freedom of settlement and movement within the territory of member states, but also about strengthening our fundamental human and civil rights. Guarding these rights is the Court of Justice of the European Union, as well as the European Court of Human Rights existing at the Council of Europe, together with the Venice Commission.
We will talk to our guests about the functioning of these bodies, explain why they are obliged to enforce their judgments, and how they affect the lives of EU citizens. We will also talk about how the independence of the judiciary in a member state relates to respect for fundamental rights, and why/how CJEU judgments are used in rebuilding the rule of law in Poland.
We cannot wait for you to meet our guests:
Dr Hanna Machińska from the University of Warsaw, a former chairwoman of the Warsaw office of the Council of Europe, former deputy Ombudsman, and recipient of an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Law at the University of Zurich.
Prof. Michał Romanowski from the University of Warsaw, lawyer and parliamentary advisor.
Dr Agnieszka Kubal from UCL, researcher focusing on the human rights mobilisation in Eastern Europe and legitimacy of the European Court of Human Rights.
Judge Igor Tuleya, a Warsaw district court judge, member of the Polish Judges Association "Iustitia”, Global Jurist of the Year according to the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law (USA).
The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, 18th of May, 3:30 PM. Follow the link to register. The event will be conducted in Polish.
